Every date range has a hero and a workhorse. Ajwa is the hero. Mariami is the workhorse — and in Malaysian households, it's the one that actually gets eaten.
Starting at RM5.88 for 100g and RM48.90 for a kilogram, Mariami is the most affordable date we stock. That's not a compromise. It's a different kind of date, with a texture nothing else in the range matches.
What Mariami Is
Mariami is a semi-dry variety with a distinctive profile:
- Shape: elongated, medium to large
- Colour: golden amber through to deep dark brown, depending on grade
- Skin: smooth, lightly glossy
- Flesh: thick and substantial
- Texture: chewy — this is the defining characteristic
- Taste: rich caramel sweetness with a faint nutty edge
That chewiness is the point. Medjool is fudgy, Safawi is soft, Ajwa is dry. Mariami has genuine bite — it's satisfying in a way that makes two or three feel like a proper snack rather than a mouthful of sugar.
A note on origin: Mariami is grown across the Middle East and is widely associated with the Madinah region, though you'll see it attributed variously to Saudi Arabia, Iran and the UAE depending on who you ask. The trade naming is inconsistent. What's consistent is the fruit itself — and in Malaysia it's known simply as kurma Mariami.
Understanding the Six Grades
Mariami has the most grades of anything in our range, and this confuses people. Here's what they actually mean.
| Grade | What it is | From |
|---|---|---|
| Golden | Lighter amber colour, smaller fruit, mildest sweetness | RM5.88 / 100g |
| A | Standard size, the everyday benchmark | RM8.90 / 100g |
| AA | Larger than A, more uniform | RM9.90 / 100g |
| Jumbo | Large fruit, noticeably longer | RM10.00 / 100g |
| Premium A | Selected Grade A, boxed presentation | RM11.50 / 200g |
| Premium Jumbo | Largest and most uniform, gift-ready | RM72.00 / 1kg |
Golden deserves a word of its own. It isn't a lower-quality Mariami — it's a lighter-coloured, slightly less intense one. Some people prefer it precisely because it's gentler. If you find dark dates too rich, start with Golden.
For buying in bulk, Grade A at RM48.90 per kilogram and Golden at RM48.90 per kilogram are the value choices. For gifting, Premium Jumbo.
As always: a higher grade means a bigger, more uniform date. It doesn't mean more nutrition.
What Mariami Offers Nutritionally
Dates are broadly similar across varieties, and we've said as much in every guide we've written. Mariami is no exception — but a few things are worth naming.
Fibre. Around 6–7g per 100g, like most dates. This supports regular digestion and slows the absorption of the fruit's natural sugars — which is why dates sit at a glycemic index of roughly 50 despite being high in sugar.
Potassium, magnesium and iron. Useful minerals, and potassium matters more than people think in a climate where you lose it through sweat.
Steady energy. The combination of natural sugar and fibre releases energy more gradually than refined sweets. Good before exercise, good at iftar, good at 4pm when the biscuit tin is calling.
The thick flesh helps with portion control. Because Mariami has real substance, two or three genuinely satisfy. Lighter varieties are easier to keep eating without noticing.
What we won't claim: Mariami is a nutritious whole food, not a treatment for anything. The research on dates doesn't support medical claims, and we're not going to make them.
Why Mariami Works for Malaysian Households
The price makes volume possible. A kilogram at RM48.90 means you can keep a bowl filled through a whole month of Ramadan without thinking about it. That's the practical reason it's our recommendation for daily iftar in our Ramadan buying guide.
The texture suits cooking. Thick, chewy flesh holds its shape when chopped, which makes Mariami better than softer varieties for kuih, cakes and anything where you don't want the date to dissolve.
The range of pack sizes is genuinely useful. 100g for trying, 1kg for Ramadan, boxed Premium for gifts — all the same fruit.
Children like it. Sweet enough to be a treat, chewy enough to be interesting.
How to Use Mariami
- Everyday snacking — two or three with tea or coffee
- Breaking fast — soft enough to be gentle on an empty stomach
- Chopped into kuih and baking — holds its shape better than Medjool
- Stuffed — the thick flesh takes an almond or walnut well
- Energy balls and granola — chewy texture works in the blender without turning to paste
- Lunchboxes — sturdy enough not to squash
Storage
- Keep sealed, away from heat and direct sunlight.
- In Malaysian humidity, refrigerate anything you won't finish within two to three weeks.
- Freezes well for long-term storage.
- White surface bloom is crystallised sugar, not mould.
Mariami's semi-dry texture makes it more forgiving in humidity than soft varieties like Medjool or Rotab.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Mariami cheaper than other dates? It's grown in greater volume than scarce varieties like Ajwa. The price reflects supply, not quality.
What's the difference between Golden and the other grades? Golden is lighter in colour, smaller and milder in sweetness. It's a different expression of the same variety, not a lower grade of it.
Is Mariami good for Ramadan? Yes — it's our recommendation for daily iftar across a whole month, because it's affordable at volume and gentle enough on an empty stomach.
How many Mariami dates a day? Two to four is a sensible everyday amount. Our guide to how many dates to eat a day covers this properly.
Can I use Mariami in baking? Yes, and it's better than Medjool for anything where you want the pieces to stay distinct. For date paste, Medjool blends more smoothly.
Is Mariami the same as Maryam or Maryami dates? Yes — different transliterations of the same name. You'll see all three spellings in the trade.
