Safawi Dates: Madinah Quality Without the Ajwa Price

Ajwa gets the attention. Medjool gets the photographs. Safawi is the one that quietly ends up in most Malaysian kitchens — and once you understand what it is, that makes complete sense.

Safawi comes from the same place as Ajwa: Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Same region, same growing conditions, same palms tended the same way. What differs is the cultivar, the price, and the flavour — and for everyday eating, the differences work in Safawi's favour.

What Safawi Actually Is

Safawi is a semi-dry Madinah variety with a distinctive profile:

  • Colour: dark brown to near-black
  • Shape: round to oval, longer than it is wide
  • Moisture: below 15%, which is what "semi-dry" means in practice
  • Texture: soft with thick, substantial flesh
  • Aroma and taste: noticeably caramel-scented, richly sweet

That moisture figure matters more than it sounds. Below 15% is the sweet spot where a date stays soft enough to be pleasant but dry enough to keep well — which, in Malaysian humidity, is a genuine practical advantage over wetter varieties.

Our Safawi is grown organically without chemical treatment, and comes in grades A, Premium and Organic Jumbo, from 100g packs at RM8.90 up to 1kg at RM49.90.

Safawi vs Ajwa: How to Tell Them Apart

Both are dark Madinah dates, and shoppers confuse them constantly. Some sellers are happy to let that confusion continue. We'd rather you knew.

Safawi Ajwa
Origin Madinah Madinah
Shape Oval, elongated Small, round
Colour Dark brown Near-black, uniformly dark
Surface Slight sheen, gentle wrinkling Matte, fine pale wrinkles
Texture Soft, thick flesh Soft but drier
Taste Rich, caramel, distinctly sweet Mild, restrained
Price Everyday Premium

The honest summary: if you want the variety with specific significance in Islamic tradition, that's Ajwa — see our Ajwa guide. If you want a Madinah date that tastes better to most palates and costs far less, that's Safawi.

A lot of households buy both: a small pack of Ajwa for the morning practice, and Safawi for everything else.

What Safawi Offers Nutritionally

Dates are broadly similar across varieties, and we won't pretend otherwise. But Safawi has a few things worth naming.

Iron. Safawi is noted for its iron content, which supports red blood cell formation and healthy energy levels. Combined with the natural vitamin C in a varied diet, that's a useful contribution for anyone building a more iron-conscious way of eating.

Fibre. Like all dates, Safawi carries meaningful dietary fibre — roughly 6–7g per 100g. This supports regular digestion and, importantly, slows the absorption of the fruit's natural sugars.

Minerals. Potassium, calcium and magnesium, all of which matter more than people realise in a hot climate where you lose minerals through sweat.

Steady energy. The combination of natural sugars and fibre gives a gentler, longer energy release than refined sweets — which is exactly why dates work so well at iftar and before exercise.

What we won't claim: Safawi is a nutritious whole food. It isn't a treatment for any medical condition, and the research on dates generally doesn't support that framing.

Why Safawi Suits Everyday Eating

The price works. At RM49.90 for a kilogram of Grade A, Safawi is affordable enough to keep a bowl on the table through a whole month of Ramadan without wincing. Ajwa at the same volume is a very different conversation.

The flavour is more approachable. Safawi's caramel sweetness wins people over immediately — particularly children and anyone new to dates. Ajwa's mildness is an acquired appreciation.

It stores well. That sub-15% moisture means Safawi handles Malaysian humidity better than soft varieties like Medjool or Rotab.

It's substantial. The thick flesh means two or three Safawi genuinely satisfy, which makes them a real alternative to biscuits rather than a token gesture.

How to Use Safawi

  • Breaking fast — two or three with water, then pause before the meal
  • Afternoon snack — with tea or coffee, the classic pairing
  • With nuts — stuffed with almonds or walnuts, or simply eaten alongside them
  • Children's snacks — softer and sweeter than most varieties, easy to like
  • Smoothies and oats — pit and blend, or chop through porridge
  • Before exercise — fast carbohydrate with potassium

Storage

  • Seal the container and keep it away from heat and direct sunlight.
  • In Malaysian humidity, refrigerate anything you won't finish within two weeks.
  • Safawi freezes well for long-term storage.
  • White surface bloom is crystallised sugar, not mould — perfectly safe.

Understanding the Grades

As with our other dates, grade refers to size and uniformity, not to a different fruit or a different origin:

  • Grade A — standard size, the everyday choice and the best value
  • Premium — larger and more uniform, better presentation
  • Organic Jumbo — the largest fruit, organically grown, for gifting or when you want the best of the crop

A higher grade is a bigger date. It isn't more nutritious.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Safawi as good as Ajwa? For eating, many people prefer it — it's sweeter and softer. Ajwa carries specific religious significance that Safawi doesn't. They serve different purposes.

Why is Safawi cheaper than Ajwa? Ajwa production is more limited and demand is far higher because of its place in Islamic tradition. Safawi is grown in greater volume in the same region.

Are Safawi dates good for diabetics? Dates have a moderate glycemic index and studies in people with type 2 diabetes have been reassuring at moderate portions. Speak to your doctor about your own diet. Our guide to how many dates to eat a day covers portions.

How many Safawi dates a day? Two to four is a sensible everyday amount for most adults.

Are Safawi dates good for anaemia? They contribute iron and are a reasonable part of an iron-conscious diet, but they are not a treatment for anaemia. If you've been diagnosed, follow your doctor's advice.

Is Safawi the same as Kalmi? The names are sometimes used interchangeably in South Asian markets. Both describe dark Madinah-region dates, though usage varies by region and seller.
